Action Alert :Universal Single Payer Health Care

From Progressive Democrats of America:

It is time refocus our national priorities by redirecting wasteful and unnecessary military spending to meet human needs. Progressive Democrats of America, the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee and Healthcare-NOW are working together for single-payer healthcare. The majority of Americans want a national publicly financed, privately delivered, not-for-profit system which guarantees comprehensive health care for all, and will provide much needed relief to the 50 million Americans without access to healthcare, the millions more who are under-insured, and the business and labor communities.

Please take a few minutes to contact your Representative to ask him/her to co-sponsor HR 676, the Expanded and Improved Medicare for All Act. (Follow the link for the full text, to learn who the co-sponsors are, and to follow the status of the bill.)

Please sign the petition, too--whatever you do, please keep informed and keep working for H.R. 676. Congress must have the support of courageous people at home to muster the courage for historic legislation. You are essential to our progress.

Pleasego to this link to email your Congressional Representative and/or sign a petition

Action Alert for Michiganians

The Greater Area Detroit Chamber of Congress weren’t the only ones on chilly damp Mackinac Island on May 27. DIME or Drug Industry Immunity Must End was also there. DIME is focused on ending Michigan’s one of a kind drug immunity law that shields drug companies when their products harm or kill people. There is no other state that gives the absolute immunity that Michigan does. Even conservative Texas, the state with a law closest to Michigan’s, has exceptions to complete immunity. Michigan is in its own legal universe on this one.
DIME , who has had help with organizing from Michigan Citizen Action, based out of Kalamazoo , held a press conference that opened with Democratic Party Chairperson Mark Brewer pointing out that targeted Michigan Supreme Court Justice Robert Young voted to uphold the law in a 2002 Michigan Supreme Court decision. Justice Young is a former insurance company lawyer who votes in favor of the insurance companies 80 % of the time. Justice Young is up for re-election in 2010 and the Democrats are hoping to vote him out, much in the same way as they did Cliff Taylor in 2008.
Brewer says of Justice Young on the Democratic Party website:

Action Alert : Environment

Tell Obama: Keep it up! Go after Global Warming pollution NOW!

Dear James,

This is BIG. The EPA just announced that they will treat carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases as pollutants that threaten public health1. It might seem like a common sense decision, but it's an essential step to getting real action to avert a climate catastrophe.

Congress is at last moving, tentatively, toward passing a climate bill too, but even if that law is approved it could take months to start taking effect2. Luckily, with the new EPA ruling, President Obama is empowered to start taking big steps *right now* to regulate those planet-cooking emissions.

We've wasted eight years doing nothing, we can't spare another month; not another DAY. Tell President Obama to use his new powers NOW to start ramping down climate change.

http://act.truemajorityaction.org/p/7002/bluepetition?petition_KEY=117

There's good reason for Obama to move fast. In addition to Earth Day coming up, if the President doesn't take action soon, Congress could cut him off at the pass - and delay real action for years. The coal industry, and other polluters, have hired literally THOUSANDS of lobbyists to fight climate change regulation in Congress.

Action Alert Health Care

If Americans are given the choice of a quality public health insurance option similar to Medicare, we could all save up to 30% more on our health care costs. Tell Congress how you'd use the money you save.

Dear MoveOn member,
Get this: If Congress passes Obama's plan and Americans are given the choice of a public health insurance option similar to Medicare, we could all save up to 30% on our health care premiums.1 That's a huge savings, and we'd still get high-quality coverage and be able to choose our doctors.
And even if you choose to keep your current insurance, you'd save anyway. You see, HMOs and big insurance companies are the only game in town right now—so they overcharge us to boost profits and pay out CEO bonuses. If Obama's plan passes, they'd have to compete with it, and their prices would have to be more honest.
Lower premiums for us means lower profits for them, so insurance companies are putting extreme pressure on Congress to drop the public health insurance option. But Americans deserve to have this choice—and it's necessary to help rein in out-of-control health care costs.

Giving Peace a Chance

On Arpil 5th, 2009, President Obama stood on the world stage amongst thousands of flag-waving Czechs and spoke of good humor, home town Chicago, the will of the people over tanks and guns, old conflicts, revolution, moral leadership as the most powerful weapon, iron curtains that fell and the state of 21st century nuclear weapons.

An excerpt:

…We are here today because enough people ignored the voices who told them that the world could not change. We're here today because of the courage of those who stood up and took risks to say that freedom is a right for all people, no matter what side of a wall they live on, and no matter what they look like. We are here today because the simple and principled pursuit of liberty and opportunity shamed those who relied on the power of tanks and arms to put down the will of a people…

Some argue that the spread of these weapons cannot be stopped, cannot be checked -– that we are destined to live in a world where more nations and more people possess the ultimate tools of destruction. Such fatalism is a deadly adversary, for if we believe that the spread of nuclear weapons is inevitable, then in some way we are admitting to ourselves that the use of nuclear weapons is inevitable…
