Fwd: Rallying Christian Progressives
Hi friends,
With the passage of the historic health care reform
the energies of the progressive movement have been rejuvenated, especially as we
have seen the rise of the so-called Tea Party movement. It's high time we
rally the fellow progressives we know and gird up our loins for the coming
elections in November.

With conservatives all fired up but in bit of a state of
disarray, we can make a real difference - now!
Some of you may be aware that there is a proposal
quietly being discussed to shut down the CrossLeft website, and to create
something new in its place. It would merge the talents and power of the IPC,
CrossLeft, The Progressive Christian Magazine (TPC) and the Progressive
Christian Alliance (PCA). Quite a powerful assemblage.

To date this has been just talk. I'd like to
initiate a fuller discussion. Now is the time to rally and focus our energies in
defense of, and promotion of, Christian progressive ideals.

What would this look like? 1st the new website
would have a new Board; I'd suggest a 9 member Board, 3 from the IPC-CL
contingent, 3 from The Progressive Christian Magazine and 3 from the PCA. They
would serve as an editorial board for development of progressive Christian
ideas. They would approve the new bloggers.

I can see the website being the pawing ground for
new ideas, drawing upon the well developed talents in the IPC-CL and PCA
contignets, which then might be developed into news article for the Magazine to
publish. PCA members might highlight local church activities that we might
want to see spread across the nation. IPC-CL would expand on the religious
philosophical areas they have been known for in past years.

The underlying objective would be to rally
progressive Chrisitan energies, to develop new ideas, to explore and publish
counter arguments to the extreme conservatives, to focus on succesful local
initiatives and rally support for progressive candidates for local and federal
offices.

Personally I'd like to see a full exploration of
the alliance between Wall St. and C Street, between capitalist
neocons and uber-conservative theocons. Thomas Frank's The Wrecking
Crew and Jeff Sharlet's The Family would be good reads to give us
a greater deeper understanding of said alliance.

We can begin by licking our progressive
wounds. Yes, we didn't get a single payer/ public option but we did get an good
place from which to build. Yes Barack Obama is much less progressive than we'd
hoped for. What we got, and I support, is a pragmatic chief executive. Politics
is the art of the possible. And what is possible is for us to rally round the
flag and move forward with renewed hope and energy.

These are just my thoughts, from an old progressive
firehorse.

BTW some of you may not have heard from me in quite
sometime. I just went thru my address book to reach out to good folks far and
wide.
