The Obama Brand
Naomi Klein, on "Democracy Now ! ",the other day, said all of we Obama supporters who are shocked at what is going on, were sold a "brand" and we bought it. Obama used all the right buzz words in his campaign, peace, health care, equality, education, jobs for Americans (remember re-visiting NAFTA ?) , but now like so many products, the brand isn't living up to the advertising. He actually promised little. I knew something was not right immediately when he kept Gates as Secretary of Defense. I knew maybe not so much change was coming. If he escalates the war in Afghanistan with tens of thousands more troops, I will lose that hope for change that I voted for.

Have we done our share?
This is so hard for me, my mind knows that change won't happen without all of us who voted also working for the change, President Obama even told us straight up that this was going to have to be a joint effort.
And when I get upset about the additional troops, or the weak health care bill we're going to get rather than a real new health care system, or any number of other things that I've been disappointed in him about, I have to take a few steps back and a few deep breaths. I haven't worked as hard or effectively as I can for any of these things. I haven't done anything to make the neighborhood a better place.
(sounds a bit like the confession, doesn't it? for things I have done and those things I have left undone... not loved the Lord with my whole heart... not loved my neighbor as myself....)
It seems like, in all fairness, we have to all do our job, which is to ooch and schooch public opinion around to where a majority want the radical reforms we have in mind. If we don't do that, the president has to propose the degree of change the country wants. And I feel that I can't complain until/unless I've done my part. Until/unless we ALL have done our parts.
Remind me of this, next time I start complaining.
