African Slavery - a historic perspective
I've been conducting a bit of research into the historic background of African slavery. What I have discovered has been enlightening.
First of all, slavery of Africans is not the "whiteman's invention". Slavery is a creation of the human family. The word "slavery" in fact has as its root the word "Slav", from the Slavic peoples of eastern Europe. In Africa it dates back many centuries, back to sub-Sharan roots. While there was some slave trade dating back to the Nile River, the transportation of huge numbers did not occur until camels were introduced in the 10th century. Arab traders began large scale trade in human slaves after that.
The author of book "The Legacy of Arab Islam in Africa" claims that there where about 11 million Africans transported across the Atlantic, of which about 10% died in the crossing. (1.1 million). 95% were sent to the Carribean and South America. That means that only about 650,000 were imported to North America. 2/3 of these were men, being imported to work as laborers in primarily agricultural or mining industries. Slaves often were purchased in West African regions known to Europeans as the Slave Coast, Gold Coast and Cote d'Ivorie (Ivory Coast). Often these slaves were captured and sold into slavery as a direct result of wars between powerful African empires and their Kings, such as those on the Bight of Biafra who traded them to Europeans in exchange for firearms, rum, fabrics and seed grain. Over a period of time several West African empires were established, principally the Mali, Ghana and the Songhai Empires. As black on black slavery was commonly employed in the building of these empires, it has deep historic roots.
In sub-Saharan Africa about 28 million survived and where sold into slavery. The cross Saharan trek was very harsh, it had an estimated 80 to 90% mortality rate. By the time it finally offically ended, the over 1,400 years of its history anywhere from 112 to 140 million Africans died while in transport to slave markets.
The high mortality rate can be somewhat explained by the fact that Arab traders preferred women. In direct contrast to the trans-Atlantic trade about 2/3 of the slaves where female, destined to work as chambermaids for the women of harems. If any became pregnant and gave birth, their children were often immediately killed. Men were either impressed into military service or used as eunochs. As the Arabs thought African men had an insatible sex drive, they were often castrated.
Their attitude towards Africans is well expressed in the thought that Negros made good slaves because they were quite submissive, possessing attributes similiar to animals.
As this posting has become a bit long I'll end here. Suffice to say that while European import of African slaves was quite horrendous in its impact on human lives, it is by no means the whiteman's invention. This is "the splinter in the eye" African-Americans need to address and overcome. Please do no construe my remarks to in any way excuse the brutality of the slave trade in America. These wounds do very much cry out for healing. Let progressive Christians play a large role in the healing proess.

Consider this view of slavery
First, I in no way minimize the horrors of slavery of any kind---forced labor, child labor, sex labor, indentured servant, "wives obey your husbands," on and on. Instead, I weep that it continues to seep insidiously into the very fabric of human life.
In the light of the above statement, let's consider slavery and race relations from a another aspect. In 533 A.D. the Church determined that reincarnation would henceforth be considered heresy, even though is a fact of life. (You can read the chapter on my website entitled "Reincarnation in the Bible" for background information.) Declaring reincarnation heresy necessitated defining "eternal" as beginning with birth onto the physical plane within our present family-of-origin. The true definition of "eternal" screams the inaccuracy of thinking in terms of eternal having a beginning. "Eternal" = having no beginning, no ending.
Acknowledging reincarnation as an integral part of how eternal life expresses within a linear time frame, we learn that Earth is our Soul's schoolhouse. As the eternal part of us---the Soul---evolves, we incarnate into a huge variety of circumstances in order to learn the lessons we need to progress on the spiritual Path. We experience life as male and female, rich and poor. We incarnate into each of the four major races: white, black, red, and yellow. We choose lifetimes as slaves, masters, governoring officials, peasants. We vary our incarnations in order to experience all facets of life and to learn from them.
How does this impact today's slavery and race relations? Consider the fact that those who incarnated into the black race this lifetime may have done so in order to "walk in the shoes" of those who experience discrimination based on the color of their skin. Consider that those who incarnated in the white race may have done so in order to work for the equality of all persons while having the advantage of not being hampered by the color of their skin. Consider that those blacks who made/are making outstanding contributions in bringing about more equality, such as Oprah, Martin Luther King, Maya Angelo, on and on, did so in order to lift up the black race to the level of worldwide respect and honor. These persons are what metaphysicians call "old souls." They have evolved to the point of becoming a world teacher. In order to reach this advanced stage, their Souls have lived through all sorts of life experiences and they have learned to choose consistently "the good of all" over "the good of self alone."
Consider that those of the white race who have worked for equality for all have done so because their souls remember what it is like to be a slave, to be downtrodden, to be the object of discrimination.
Recognizing the fact of reincarnation within Earth's linear time frame serves to remind us that "you are me" and "I am you," with the only difference being the linear time frame of "then" and "now."
evidence
Nancy,
Is there anything that you have either Biblically or through some sort of other evidence that points to reincarnation as a fact? You seem to be declaring it is so, and I'm wondering upon what you are basing that belief.
Two chapters on reincarnation
Stephen,
In response to your question, I have placed excerpts from two chapters of my book on my blog. They are entitled "Have I Lived Before?" and "Who Sinned? ... This Man or His Parents?"
The book to which I think Christians would best relate is Dr. Herbert Bruce Puryear's WHY JESUS TAUGHT REINCARNATION. This book may be purchased through:
The Logos Center
P.O. Box 12880
Scottsdale, AZ 85267-2880
480-483-8777
Dr. Puryear takes the reader through the Bible, making it come alive in ways that few suspect possible.
Elizabeth Claire Prophet wrote a very well researched book, REINCARNATION: THE MISSING LINK TO CHRISTIANITY, in which she tells the story of the Church Fathers and their removal of reincarnation from Christianity.
Dr. Gina Cerminara, in MANY MANSIONS, tells the story of Edgar Cayce, and his contributions to knowledge of reincarnation. Edgar Cayce was the most scientifically verified psychic/intuitive in the world. The Association for Research & Enlightenment, located in Virginia Beach, Virginia, continues the natural healing and research begun by Edgar Cayce.
The last two books are available through Amazon.com.
Metaphysical bookstores will have a variety of more recent books on reincarnation.
Reincarnation: The Phoenix Fire Mystery
Steve,
I think Nancy has done a great job introducing this whole topic. In addition to the books she has mentioned, I would highly recommend "Reincarnation: The Phoenix Fire Mystery. An East-West Dialogue on Death and Rebirth from the Worlds of Religion, Science, Psychology, Philosophy, Arts, and Literature and from Great Thinkers of the Past and Present" by Joseph Head and S. L. Cranston, 1977 Julian Press/Crown Publishers, Inc. New York
As the long name signifies it is a very comprehensive analysis of the whole idea of Reincarnation (Preexistence and Metempsychosis) from ancient times to the present (at least 'til the 1970's). For good introductory information I highly recomend you read 2 sections. 1st read "Early Christian" pp 134-165. It surveys the thought of early Christian church leaders such as Justim Martyr, Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian, Origen, St. Gregory of Nazianzus and St. Augustine.
Of note is what happended to Origen, who had taught about pre-existence of the soul. Read "The Anathemas against Preexistence", pp. 156-160. Essentially Emperor Justinian, head of the whole Easten Christian empire, rigged a vote against Origen's teaching in the famous Fifth Ecumenical Council in 554. Had he not done so the whole issue of pre-existence of the soul, hence reincarnation, would have been
part of the present day teachings. In fact the 4 Roman Popes who followed the 5th century council meeting never even mentioned Origen and seemed not to know of the condemnation against the teaching of preexistance.
The second section I recommend you read is "Later Christian" pp 172-186. It talks about The Rebirth of Preexistence and Reincarnation, and Churchmen and Religious Writers from Joseph Glanvill (1636-1680) to Leslie D. Whitehead (1893-1976), including Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965).
There is also a lot of science underlying the concept. In a later posting I'll attmept to survey some of it. To me, a Deist, it makes a lot of good sense. I came to a belief in Reincarantion via the hard science such as quantum physics and biology and the human sciences such as psychology, especially Jungian, and Near Death Experiences (NDE) and Out of Body Experiences (OBE). Via my own OBE I know from 1st hand experience that there is life beyond this physical plane, I've seen "the valley of the shadow of death". My brother has seen the famed tunnel of light, been there and was sent back. Another close friend was also there a couple of years ago, saw the beautiful other side, was sent back and came back angry as hell that he was not allowed to enter. (He was told he still had work to do on this physical plane.)
More later.
Rich
