Tell your rep: it's time to clean the House!

Support Ethics Reform

Dear FaithfulAmerican:

size=1>"If you want to know who you are as opposed to
who you like to think you are, keep an eye on where your
feet carry you."  Frederick Buechner, "Wishful
Thinking: A Theological ABC"

It seems like only yesterday we were hearing
candidates promising to end the "culture of corruption" in
Washington.  Some members have even offered legislation to
begin sopping up the sludge from hurricane "Abramoff" and
others.  But get this - the House has to vote on whether or
not to bring the issue of lobby reform to the floor, and many
members - from both parties - are actually against the
idea!

Wait a minute - shouldn't EVERY member of
the House want to end corruption?  Isn't this what they
promised - no more lavish mega-donatons from lobbyists and
special interests, no more hiding the sources of campaign
donations?  It seems like a no-brainer, at least from a
moral point of view.  Yet the thought of
Congress living up to its promise to clean up its own
house is proving to be easier preached than
practiced.

Here's where you can help.  You are a
person of faith, conscience, and common sense.  You know
what is right, and right now, your representative needs you to
remind him or her that lobby reform is a moral duty, not an
option.  Please use your voice to let your representative
know that you are watching closely AND you vote.

Let's work together and make sure that the
House does the right thing.

Subject: You can begin NOW to end the culture of corruption

Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted here],

I write to you as a person of faith and conscience to urge you to fulfill your moral duty as an elected official to bring an end to the culture of corruption in Congress. You can begin by voting to allow lobby reform to be brought to the floor of the House, followed by voting for effective and publicly credible lobby reform.

We urge you to vote for the rule on the two lobby reform bills and to support H.R. HR 2316 Honest Leadership and Open Government Act of 2007 and HR 2317 Lobbying Transparency Act of 2007.

H.R. 2316 would provide much-needed improvements to disclosure, including an online database of electronic filings by lobbyists. In addition, it would restrict Members of Congress and staff from negotiating for jobs while in office.

H.R. 2317 provides for disclosure of "bundled" contributions by lobbyists.

While we believe both these bills are major steps forward, we urge the House to continue to work on additional reforms that would end the culture of corruption on Capitol Hill.

Jesus said, "Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." Isn't it time that all members of Congress realized that the heart of democracy is in its representative government? By operating with treasure from lobbyists and special interests, you cannot hope to serve the people who sent you there.

I ask that you begin a new day in Congress by casting your vote to end this shameful era of corruption in our nation's history.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
